Vietnam to compete at half of sports at ASEAN ParaGames

HANOI, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- A total of 151 Vietnamese people with disabilities will vie for medals in eight out of 16 sports at the 2017 Southeast Asian (ASEAN) ParaGames from Sept. 17-23, Vietnam's General Department of Sports and Physical Training said on Wednesday.

Among the Vietnamese athletes, 12 weightlifters and swimmers are expected to bag home many gold medals.

The potential medalists have undergone intensive training in Hanoi capital and Ho Chi Minh City so far this year, said the department.

A total of 1,452 athletes from 11 nations, including the 10 ASEAN members and Timor-Leste will compete at 368 events of 16 sports at the approaching ASEAN ParaGames, according to host country Malaysia.

At the 2015 ASEAN ParaGames in Singapore, Vietnam won 48 golds, 58 silvers and 50 bronzes, finishing fourth, after Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia.
