HO CHI MINH CITY, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- A Vietnamese cargo ship with 21,000 liters of oil on board sank off Vietnam's southern coast on Wednesday, and local agencies were still taking preventive measures to deal with a potential oil spill.

On Thursday, the agencies placed booms and temporary floating barriers around Viet Hai 06 ship, which sank in southern Ninh Thuan province, and other equipment to recover it, the provincial authorities said.

Carrying over 3,000 tons of corrugated iron, the ship was on the way from southern Ba Ria Vung Tau province to central Thanh Hoa province, when a hole appeared on its hull.
