ANKARA, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- A religious conservative foundation staged a protest in Turkey's Black Sea province of Sinop on Tuesday, demanding to remove a statue of ancient Greek philosopher Diogenes, local daily Hurriyet reported.

Sinop is the homeland of Diogenes, who was born there in 5th century B.C. and famous as one of the founders of Cynic philosophy in ancient Greece period.

The religious foundation said what they are protesting is Greek ideology attached to the statue, rather than the art of sculpture.

"We want the Diogenes statue to be taken from the entrance of Sinop and moved to Balatlar(a local Byzantine church). We will struggle to the end, whether a petition or a permanent press statement here is required," said Ismail Tezic, the foundation's Sinop provincial representative.
