ISLAMABAD, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- At least 19 people were killed and scores of others injured in separate rain-related accidents in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi over the last two days, local Urdu media reported Wednesday.

The heavy rains, which started lashing the city on Monday night, inundated several low lying areas and flooded streets and roads, local Dawn News reported.

Rescue teams said that 12 people died in various areas of the city in separate accidents of roof collapse and electrocution, while a kid was dead when a signboard fell over him at highway.

The rains also inundated highways, disrupting road traffic and leading to a traffic jam in the city on Wednesday morning.

The Sindh Building Control Authority had asked residents of 340 buildings to vacate the dilapidated structures as they might collapse if the heavy rains coupled with gusty winds continue.

A maximum of 44 millimeters of rain was recorded in the city over the last two days, local weather office said, adding that the rain is expected to continue in parts of the city on Wednesday.
