RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Strengthening dialogue and becoming better acquainted with Brazilian law will help Chinese companies achieve greater success, a local expert told Xinhua at the first Brazil-China Seminar held here this week.

"Problems often occur in international business due to insufficient knowledge of local laws and business structures," said Evandro Carvalho, director of the Center for Chinese Studies at the Brazilian college Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV), at the one-day seminar held Wednesday.

Recent years have seen a growing number of Chinese companies in Brazil, and they must know the local institutional structure and how regulation agencies work, said Carvalho, adding that it is also the case for Brazilian companies investing in China.

"Chinese corporations in Brazil, in order to operate more efficiently, must learn to cooperate with local ones as they have different management methods," he added.

He warned against thinking that knowing the general economic situation of the country is enough.

The seminar, hosted by FGV's Rio de Janeiro Law School, aimed to discuss difficulties faced by Chinese companies in Brazil and seek solutions.

Since 2009, China has been Brazil's leading trade partner, with bilateral trade exchange amounting to 58.5 billion U.S. dollars in 2016, and is a key investor in the South American country.
