TOKYO, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks retreated Friday morning as market sentiment was dented by the yen's appreciation against the U.S. dollar, which weighed on exporter issues.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 72.68 points, or 0.36 percent, from Thursday to 19,956.58.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, fell 3.53 points, or 0.22 percent, to 1,630.29.
Mining, marine transportation, and real estate-linked stocks comprised those that declined the most by the morning break.
