NEW DELHI, July 30 (Xinhua) -- At least two people were killed and 40 others got sick due to consumption of spurious liquor in India's northeastern state of Manipur, officials said Sunday.

The liquor was consumed by people on Saturday evening in Wangoi town of Imphal, the capital city of Manipur.

"Two persons have died after consuming spurious liquor and about 40 others were hospitalized," an official said. "Of the 40 people hospitalized, the condition of six is stated to be critical."

Locals said those who consumed the liquor complained of dizziness and were vomiting.

Police has started investigating into the matter.

Earlier this month, at least 18 people were killed and over a dozen taken ill due to consumption of spurious liquor in Uttar Pradesh,

In Indian states of Bihar and Gujarat, alcohol is totally prohibited by law.

Spurious alcohol deaths are often reported in India, where people drink cheap country-made bootleg liquor.
