KABUL, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Afghan counternarcotics police have arrested as many as 874 drug-traffickers during a series of operations in the war-affected country over the past four months, an official said Wednesday.
Deputy to the Interior Minister for counternarcotics, General Abdul Khalil Bakhtyar told reporters during a press conference here that the ministry's counterdrug unit has launched 764 operations aimed at fighting drugs and smuggling in the last four months.
Bakhtyar said, "874 drug smugglers have been arrested as a result of these operations by Counter Narcotics Police of Afghanistan (CNPA) including 140 big fishes over the past months."
According to the official, 19 heroin labs have been destroyed and 116 tons of drug including opium, heroin, hashish and morphine have been seized during the operations.
According to the official, the seized contraband worth 292 million U.S. dollars inside Afghanistan and 900 million U.S. dollars outside the country has been destroyed.
