KATHMANDU, July 19 (Xinhua)-- Seven people, including four Indian nationals were arrested for smuggling 30 kg contraband hashish from central Nepal's Makawanpur District on Wednesday, police said.

The four Indian and three Nepali nationals carrying bags filled with the drugs were staying in a hotel at Hetauda when security personnel launched a search operation in the district headquarters of Makawanpur, about 90 km south of the capital.

The arrested have been taken into custody at District Police Office in Hetauda for further investigation, Deputy Superintendent of Police at Armed Police Force Tribhuwan Bista told local media.

Police have seized 30 kg of hashish, a vehicle bearing an Indian registration number, six sets of mobile phones and 33,000 Indian rupees from the arrestees during the checking.

Nepal has open border with India which helps smugglers, officials say.

In the past six years, a high number of Indian nationals were detained in drug trade in the Himalayan nation, statistics received from the Nepal police said.

According to the statistics, the Nepal police arrested 763 Indians.
