SHENZHEN, June 27 (Xinhua) -- South China's Shenzhen City debuted "ladies first" carriages on its metro Monday.

According to Shenzhen Metro Group, the first and last carriages of every train on Line 1, 3, 4 and 5 are now designated priority carriages for women.

During the trial period, pink signs saying "Priority Carriages for Women" have been installed on the shield gates and inside the carriages. Railway staff are informing the availability of the special carriages in various languages.

The move has been hailed by female passengers, some of whom said they had feel uncomfortable during peak hours and others who had encountered harassment on the metro.

"When the train is overcrowded and I have to stand in close proximity to male passengers it's often uncomfortable," said a female passenger surnamed Cong.

According to Shenzhen Metro Group, the special carriages do not segregate male passengers, if the women are traveling with a senior citizen or kids, they can sit in the carriage.

During the trial operation, Shenzhen Metro Group will review the passenger opinion.
