HO CHI MINH CITY, May 24 (Xinhua) -- The first metro route in Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City will be extended to the two neighboring provinces of Binh Duong and Dong Nai.

The metro route will be lengthened by 2 km to a depot in Binh Duong, and then the extension will be divided into two sections which head further to Binh Duong and Dong Nai, Ho Chi Minh City-based Management Authority for Urban Railways said on Wednesday.

Construction of the original route, which stretches nearly 20 km from Ben Thanh to Suoi Tien area in the city, including 2.6 km going underground, started in 2012, and is scheduled to become operational in 2020.

Total investment for the metro project is nearly 2.5 billion U.S. dollars. Cost for the route's extension is estimated at 100 million dollars.
