TOKYO, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Wednesday as a weak tone set by Wall Street and the yen's appreciation against the U.S. dollar prompted investors to secure gains made following the market's recent run of closing highs.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 91.62 points, or 0.45 percent, from Tuesday to close the day at 20,138.79.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 5.69 points, or 0.35 percent, to end at 1,611.56.

Securities, mining and nonferrous metal-related stocks comprised issues that declined the most by the close of play, and declining issues outpaced advancing ones by 1,330 to 589 on the First Section.

Trading volume on the main section came to 1,634.36 million shares, declining from Tuesday's volume of 1,836.54 million shares.

Turnover on the third trading day of the week totaled 2,263.9 billion yen (20.33 billion U.S. dollars).
