NEW DELHI, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Two youth were hung upside down from a tree after being tied with ropes and brutally thrashed on suspicion of stealing five plastic chairs from a wedding party in India's eastern state of Bihar, police said Tuesday.

The incident took place at Sonbarsa village of Kaimur district, about 200 km west of Patna, the capital city of Bihar.

The brutal public beating was filmed on camera and has gone viral on social media.

"The two boys identified as Raj Kumar Bind and Birbal Bind, both in their early twenties, were released hours later only after their poor families paid rupees 3000 (46 U.S. dollars) as compensation to wedding ceremony host," a local said.

The boys, however, denied stealing chairs from the wedding and approached police only after being supported by neighbors.

"We have registered the case and have seen the video footage of the brutality," a police official at Nuaon police station said. "It is a clear case of taking law into one's hands."

The incident, according to police, has taken place on Saturday.

Reports said the host of the wedding party caught hold of the boys after finding five plastic chairs missing.

Last month, two minor boys aged 8 and 9 years were stripped and paraded with garlands of slippers around their necks for allegedly stealing snacks from a sweet shop in India's western state of Maharashtra.

The incidents of self-vigilantism and taking law into one's own hands have seen an increase in India.
