ROME, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Italian police said Sunday that more than 1,500 people were injured, three of them seriously, in a mass stampede in the northern Italian city of Turin on Saturday night.

According to local media, Juventus fans gathered in Turin's central San Carlo Square to watch the Champions League final against Real Madrid on giant screens set up by city authorities.

While it is unclear as to what sparked the stampede -- some say a firecracker, others the falling of a police barrier -- officials concurred that the collective panic was caused by fear of a terrorist attack.

Among the critically injured in Turin were a seven-year-old boy and two young women, according to local media reports.

As the panic happened, thousands of football fans were watching the live relay of Juventus'UEFA Champions League final match against Real Madrid in Cardiff, Wales when a bang was heard.

The Championship title-holder Real Madrid of Spain beat Juventus of Italy 4-1 to win the Champions League final for the 12th time on Saturday night.
