Latvia holds local elections

RIGA, Jun 3 (Xinhua) -- Latvian voters go to the polls on Saturday to elect municipal lawmakers in 119 constituencies.

Polling stations across the country were opened at 7 a.m. (0400 GMT) and will close at 10 p.m. (1900 GMT).

According to the Central Election Commission, a total of 8,883 candidates on 558 party lists have been registered for the municipal elections.

National-level parties like the centrist Greens and Farmers Union, the center-right Unity and the National Alliance, which together form the government and the center-left Harmony are competing for seats along regional and small local political forces.

The number of local council members can be nine, 13, 15, 17 or 19 depending on the size of the local population, with the exception of the capital city of Riga, which has 60 seats on the city council. Enditem
