NEW DELHI, May 31 (Xinhua) -- India said Wednesday that its navy has rescued at least 33 Bangladesh nationals hit hard by Cyclone Mora.

Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Gopal Baglay said in a tweet that Indian Naval Ship Sumitra has rescued 33 people, including children, women and elders, off coast of Chittagong city.

"33 BD (Bangladesh) nationals rescued. INS Sumitra continuing search and rescue of more survivors," the spokesperson tweeted.

Meanwhile, the search and rescue operations by Indian Navy are in full swing, following destruction caused by Cyclone Mora. However, Indian Navy spokesperson Captain D.K. Sharma said the operations were being hampered by the prevailing rough weather in the area.

Indian navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba has said that a second ship was sent to Bangladesh to help stranded Bangladesh nationals.

"Indian Navy is ready for all types of natural emergencies in the Indian Ocean Region," he told the media.
