Myanmar issues orange alert as tropical cyclone approaches

YANGON, May 29 (Xinhua) -- The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology of Myanmar issued an orange alert on Monday morning as a depression began moving across the northeast part of the Bay of Bengal as Cyclone Mora.

The storm is centered about 304 kilometers west of Pathein and forecast to move northeastwards.

Due to Cyclone Mora, widespread rain and thundershowers are predicted for Nay Pyi Taw, Bago, Sagaing, Yangon, Ayeyarwaddy, Taninthayi regions and Mon, Kachin, Rakhine, Kayah and Kayin states.

In accordance with the department, occasional squalls with rough seas will be experienced off and along the Myanmar coasts and surface wind speed in squalls may reach 40 miles per hour.

The authorities also warned of flash flooding and landslide over the next three days.
