GENEVA, May 26 (Xinhua) -- The Swiss foreign ministry on Friday expressed its "profound sadness" over an attack on buses carrying Coptic Christians in Egypt that has killed at least 28 people.

In a statement issued on Friday evening, the Swiss foreign ministry said it "condemned with the strongest terms this bloody attack once again targeting the Egyptian Coptic community".

The statement also expressed its condolences to the families and relatives of the victims, adding that a letter of condolence has been sent to the Egyptian president, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

Gunmen opened fire on buses carrying Coptic Christians south of the Egyptian capital early Friday, killing 28 people and wounding at least 25.

About 70 Coptic Christians, who make up about 10 percent of Egypt's population of 92 million, have been killed in bomb attacks on churches in the cities of Cairo, Alexandria and Tanta since December.
