KABUL, May 26 (Xinhua) -- The first-ever leather processing factory in Afghanistan has started operation in the country's western Herat province.

"The first-ever leather processing factory launched in Afghanistan's Herat province with an aim to curb import of leather products from outside the country worth almost 350 million U.S. dollars on annual basis," the newspaper Daily Outlook reported Thursday.

Quoting an official of the newly established leather processing factory, the paper reported that the factory will use the raw materials from domestic market to increase local products.

Afghanistan, according to the official, imports leather products worth around 350 million dollars annually and the newly established leather factory would significantly reduce the import of leather products.
