YANGON, March 6 (Xinhua) -- The Myanmar authorities have called for conservation of colonial-era buildings in the country with a well thought-out plan, the official Global New Light of Myanmar reported Monday.
U Moe Moe Lwin, director of the Yangon Heritage Trust, stressed the urgent need to conserve historical buildings in Yangon with the noticeable increase in high-rise buildings since Myanmar began economic reform in 2011, moving the city toward a more sustainable infrastructure.
He emphasized the importance to cherish the heritage and maintain them in a proper way, however, warning that without proper planning, Yangon could lose its architectural heritage like many of its Asian neighbors.
The Yangon municipal authorities published a list of 190 heritage buildings in 2001, including religious buildings and government offices and other structures from the colonial era.
