Myanmar regional chief minister undergoes successful surgery

YANGON, March 6 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's Yangon region chief minister U Phyo Min Thein had undergone heart surgery successfully and he is now in good condition, according to an announcement of the Ministry of Health released Monday.

The six-hour surgery, performed on U Phyo Min Thein at Yangon's Yankin Children's Hospital on Sunday by a team of veteran Myanmar doctors, marked an extraordinary milestone for medicine in Myanmar.

U Phyo Min Thein was diagnosed with congenital stenosis of the heart valve and an enlarged aorta, the announcement said.

U Phyo Min Thein, a representative of the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) to the parliament, was assigned by the Yangon region parliament as the region's chief minister in March 2016 after the NLD won in the Nov. 8, 2015 general election.
