MAPUTO, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Seven people died and around 50 were injured when cyclone Dineo hit the southern Mozambican province of Inhambane on Wednesday evening, an official confirmed on Thursday evening.

"The total number of affected people is 130,000, most of them lived along the coastline, and we registered 20,000 houses affected," said Mauricio Xerinda, director of the National Emergency Operational Centre (CENOE).

Xerinda said more victims might be found as some people ignored the cyclone warning and insisted to stay in areas identified as dangerous.

"We still don't have the exact location of the dead victims, but all were found along the coastline, and they were hit inside their houses by falling trees," added Xerinda.

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi has expressed condolence to the victims of cyclone Dineo, while promising efforts from the government to help in recovering process.

Throughout Thursday, the cyclone moved westwards across the Inhambane interior and into Gaza province. But overland cyclones lose their strength, so the damage done in Gaza was nowhere near as severe as in Inhambane.

The storm brought heavy rain to Maputo on Thursday but the damage was slight.
