RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- An extratropical cyclone hit the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul on Thursday, leaving power outage and damaged houses, authorities said.

The cyclone, with a speed of more than 100 km per hour, damaged several transmission lines in the state and left over 130,000 houses without electricity.

In the state's southernmost area, near the border with Uruguay, the cyclone caused several trees to fall and led to the suspension of classes in schools.

The local civil defense authority warned about the risks of floods in many lagoons in the region and also alerted about the agitated sea. So far, there have been no reports of casualties.

Extratropical cyclones are relatively common in southern Brazil at this time of the year in addition to floods.
