Iran slams UN resolution on deploying observers in Aleppo

Source: Xinhua   2016-12-20 21:18:19

TEHRAN, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Iran said Tuesday that the resolution by the UN Security Council on Syria's Aleppo is an attempt to pave the ground for the deployment of foreign intelligence officers to the city under the cover of UN observers, Press TV reported.

Ali Shamkhani, the secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, said that the document also prioritized the evacuation of militants in Aleppo over the safe exit of civilians in militant-held areas and has ignored the role of the Syrian government.

Shamkhani made the remarks referring to the French-drafted resolution passed on Monday by the UN Security Council.

On Monday, the Security Council requested the United Nations and other relevant institutions to carry out "adequate, neutral monitoring and direct observation on evacuations from the eastern districts" of the war-battered city.

Through a unanimously adopted resolution, the Council also requested the UN to ensure further deployment of staff for monitoring and reporting on the evacuations, as needed and demanded all parties to provide these monitors with safe, immediate and unimpeded access.
