Iran urges boost of cooperation with Russia in region, Syria

TEHRAN, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- A top adviser to Iran's supreme leader on Sunday called for further cooperation between Iran and Russia over regional issues and Syria, Tasnim news agency reported.

"The pace of regional developments in general, Syria in particular, requires that Iran and Russia, which have strategic relations, hold close consultations," Ali Akbar Velayati told reporters after a meeting with the visiting Russian president's special envoy on Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev.

The communication between the two countries are highly important and necessary for further coordination in political, regional, security and defense areas, Velayati said.

On Sunday, Iran's senior security official, Ali Shamkhani, hailed the recapture of the strategic city of Aleppo from terrorists as a result of cooperation between Iran, Russia and Syria, saying that the development discredited the policy of Western powers and their regional partners in creating and supporting terrorist groups.

Shamkhani, the Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), further called for closer interaction between Tehran, Moscow and Damascus in the fight against terrorism, considering the political and military complexities of the crisis in Syria and the need for joint action to settle the conflict.

Lavrentiev, for his part, specified Russia's policies to boost coordination with Iran and Syria in the military, political and security spheres.
