YANGON, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar exported over 559,649 tons of rice in the first seven months of this 2016-2017 fiscal year, a reduction of about 200,000 tons year-on-year, according to the figures of the Ministry of Commerce Wednesday.
Myanmar exported 767,753 tons in the last fiscal year.
About 80 percent of the rice exports went to China mostly through border trade.
The country has to compete with other regional countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, India and Pakistan in the rice market despite lack in technology.
Meanwhile, the rice price is descending at local market in the harvesting season.
The government is encouraging farmers to raise rice yield and export paddy to enhance trade by offering tax breaks, said the ministry.
