HANOI, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- The South Korean manufacturer Samsung has recalled over 8,000 units of its faulty Galaxy Note 7 smartphones out of more than 12,600 units sold in the Vietnamese market, according to the Vietnam Competition Authority (VCA) on Tuesday.
This is part of a global recall by the world's largest phone maker after there are reports that some of its devices were exploding.
Samsung also announced to stop replacing the faulty Galaxy Note 7 smartphones with new ones but offered refunds to the device owners in Vietnam from Tuesday till Nov. 11, 2016.
The VCA appealed to consumers who had bought the Galaxy Note 7 to quickly return their devices to Samsung for their benefit, safety and social responsibility.
In a related development on Monday, Vietnam Airlines, the national flag carrier, announced it will refuse carrying the device in any form, including in person, in hand luggage and checked baggage, on all of its flights, following a similar ban by airlines throughout the world.
Earlier the national flagship carrier prohibited passengers from placing the Galaxy Note 7 in their checked baggage and stopped offering in-flight phone charging services for the handset.
