Japan has marked the seventy-first anniversary of the atomic bombing on the city of Hiroshima.
Around 50,000 people gathered for the ceremony at Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park, near the epicenter of the blast. Japan's prime minister Shinzo Abe called once again for a world without nuclear weapons.
The United States dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima towards the end of World War Two, after the Japanese Imperialist government refused to surrender to Allied forces. The nuclear attack, the first of its kind in human history, killed 140,000 people. Three days later another atomic bombing on Nagasaki claimed more than 70,000 lives.
