Myanmar to implement electric train project in 2020

YANGON, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar will start implementation of an electric train project in Yangon region in 2020, local media 7-Day Daily reported Saturday.

The project will be jointly implemented by the Yangon Region Government, Ministry of Electricity and Energy and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The private sector will also be invited to participate in the project which is estimated to cost 5 billion U.S. dollars.

Under the project, the electric trains will run from South-North and East-West, connecting with circular railways which are currently in use in Yangon.

Meanwhile, the upgrading of Yangon circular railway to accommodate more number of passengers is likely to be completed by 2020.

Out of 2.5 million passengers using public transportation, about 90,000 people daily use railway transport in Yangon region.
