BEIJING, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) on Thursday signed new arrangements for a notification mechanism on criminal cases.
The new mechanism will apply to the imposition of criminal compulsory measures and criminal prosecution against residents of the other side.
Compared to the current mechanism introduced in 2001, revisions were made in terms of time frame, content, scope and channels for notification, according to the Minister of Public Security (MPS).
The revisions were made under the guiding principle of "one country, two systems" in accordance with the Constitution, the HKSAR Basic Law and other laws from both sides, said the MPS in a press release.
The new mechanism is expected to further safeguard the rights of people on both sides, fight cross-regional crime and contribute to the prosperity and stability of both sides, according to the MPS.
The new arrangements will enter into effect on Feb. 1, 2018.
Zhao Kezhi, minister of the MPS, and Carrie Lam, chief executive of the HKSAR, attended the signing ceremony.
