WASHINGTON, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- PepsiCo, parent company of Pepsi and Lay's potato chips, said Tuesday it had preordered 100 electric Semi trucks newly-unveiled by U.S. automaker Tesla to cut gasoline consumption.

The order, representing about 1 percent of PepsiCo's U.S. fleet, is part of the American food and beverage giant's plan to reduce at least 20 percent of emissions across its supply chain by 2030.

PepsiCo has so far made the biggest order of Semi since its debut on Nov. 16, during which Tesla's chief executive Elon Musk promised the battery-powered truck would hit the road in 2019.

According to Musk, the Semi is capable of traveling 500 miles (800 km) on one charge and will cost less than a diesel Semi because of fuel savings and lower maintenance costs.

Last month, German logistics company DHL reserved 10 trucks. Fleet operator J.B. Hunt and retailer giant Wal-Mart have also said they would buy Tesla Semi.

Tesla now has at least 285 Semi reservations in hand, according to data from Reuters.

Founded in 2003, Tesla has been producing cutting-edge electric vehicles to the world.
