MONROVIA, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Liberia's presidential run-off has been rescheduled to hold on Dec. 26, the country's electoral chief Jerome Korkoya said on Tuesday.
Korkoya told reporters in Monrovia that the National Elections Commission would work to ensure a free and fair second round of voting.
The run-off should have been held earlier, on Nov. 7, but the nation's apex court placed a "stay order" on it based on petitions by disgruntled political parties after a controversial first round of voting on Oct. 10.
In their petitions, the governing Unity Party and the Liberty Party, an opposition group, called for a rerun of the election. However, their petitions were upturned by the Supreme Court which last week lifted the "stay order."
The Dec. 26 run-off is between Coalition for Democratic Change presidential candidate, George Weah, and the governing Unity Party candidate Joseph Boakai.
