3 soldiers missing after avalanche hits army post in Indian-controlled Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- At least three soldiers were missing Tuesday after an avalanche triggered by snowfall hit an army post in Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said.

The post was hit in Gurez sector of Bandipora district, 165 km north of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Today an avalanche hit an army post in Baktore area of Gurez in Bandipora, following which three personnel went missing," an Indian army official said.

"Following the incident, army pressed in rescue teams to search the missing soldiers."

Earlier this year, 14 Indian soldiers were killed after avalanches hit them in Tulail of Gurez area in Bandipora district.

Incessant rains and snowfall have been going on in Indian-controlled Kashmir since Monday.

Indian-controlled Kashmir has a rugged terrain. Landslides and avalanches are often triggered from its mountains during frequent rains and heavy snowfall.
