KUALA LUMPUR, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak would attend an Extraordinary Islamic Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) following the recent announcement by the United States to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, Malaysia's foreign ministry said Tuesday.

The Extraordinary Summit, to be held in Istanbul on Wednesday, is convened at the request of the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the foreign ministry said in a statement, adding that the Summit will review developments and discuss the implications following the announcement by the U.S. government.

"Malaysia's participation at the Summit is an affirmation of its commitment and unwavering support for the Palestinian people in their pursuit to attain their legitimate and inalienable rights for an independent State of Palestine based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital," said the statement.

Najib said last week that the U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as Israeli capital is unacceptable and that "we strongly reject the suggestion forever to make Jerusalem the capital of Israel."
