Kenya's bourse ends week lower as foreigners recede

NAIROBI, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) ended the week lower on Friday as both turnover and the key index dipped, with foreigners receding.

Equity turnover stood at 5.4 million U.S. dollars on Friday on a volume of 21 million shares from 7.4 million dollars from 26 million shares on Thursday.

Similarly, the NSE 20 Share Index was down 1.64 points to close at 3,750.53 points, highlighting a week of low for the large stocks that make up the index.

The NSE All share Index (NASI), on the other hand, was up by 0.19 points to close at 175.27 points, a new high.

Foreign participation during the session stood at 59 percent down from 64 percent on Thursday and local participation at 41 percent. The foreigners mainly traded Safaricom, Equity Bank and KenolKobil.

Safaricom, Equity Bank, Kenol Kobil, Bamburi and Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) accounted for 90 percent of the total turnover.

The most traded counters were, however, Safaricom, KenolKobil, Equity Bank, Barclays Bank and KCB moving 8.3 million, 5.1 million, 2.4 million, 1.3 million and 900,000 shares respectively.

At the bond market, turnover went up by 127 percent to stand at 13 million dollars from 5 million dollars in the previous session.
