WASHINGTON, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Defense Department said on Tuesday that it had detected a "probable" missile launch from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

"We detected a probable missile launch from North Korea (DPRK). We are in the process of assessing the situation," Pentagon spokesman Robert Manning told reporters.

The DPRK launched an unidentified ballistic missile from an area north of Pyongyang local time early Wednesday, South Korea's military also said.

The latest missile launch from the DPRK came a week after the United States designated the DPRK as a state sponsor of terror and slapped a new round of sanctions against the country, which was seen by some experts as likely to escalate the ongoing confrontation between Pyongyang and Washington.
