NEW DELHI, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- India's Railway Ministry has suspended three officials for last week's derailment of a passenger train that killed three persons and injured 10 others.

"An engineer, a supervisor and a track man have been suspended for the train accident in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh on Nov. 24, after a preliminary probe indicated dereliction of duties on their part," a senior official said Tuesday.

The accident occurred early Friday morning when 13 coaches of Vasco Da Gama-Patna Express train went off the tracks near the Manikpur railway station in the state's Chitrakoot district, some 220 km from capital Lucknow.

The train was on its way to Patna, the capital of the eastern state of Bihar, from Vasco Da Gama in the western state of Goa.

Indian Railway Minister Piyush Goyal ordered a high-level probe into the incident and also announced a compensation of 500,000 rupees (8,000 U.S. dollars) each to the family of the dead and some 100,000 rupees for those with grevious injuries.

State-owned Indian Railways is one of the world's largest train networks, criss-crossing the country from north to south and carrying millions daily. But the safety record of the colonial-era public carrier is very poor.
