BARCELONA, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- Team Ukraine was crowned the winner on Sunday of the World Electronic Sports Games (WESG), which had been held over five days at the NH Tower hotel in Barcelona, Spain.

The Ukrainian team won a prize of 40,000 euros, from an overall prize fund of 237,000 euros, and also qualifies for the WESG Final, to be held in China in March 2018. The final sees teams from every continent battle it out for prizes worth 4.66 million euros in its second edition of the tournament, the first celebrated in 2016.

The increasing popularity of E-Sports is highlighted by the fact that the 2016 finals were watched by 150 million spectators worldwide and covered by over 450 different media outlets, while the games were streamed on 13 different platforms.

Monday meanwhile saw a report published by the EAE Business School which highlighted the impact of the videogame industry in Spain.

The study, written by Cristian Zamora, professor of Digital Marketing at the EAE Business School, shows the importance of the sector to the Spanish economy after billing 1.16 billion euros in 2016, 7.4 percent more than in 2015.

The sector currently employs over 7,000 people, three times more than in 2013 and is expected to supply 10,000 jobs by 2020, mainly in companies of fewer than 50 workers, the majority of which have been functioning for fewer than five years.
