2 killed, 7 injured as quarry collapses in southern India

NEW DELHI, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- At least two people were killed and seven others injured when parts of a granite quarry collapsed in southern Indian state of Kerala Friday, police said.

The mishap happened at Marayamuttam in Neyyattinkara was on the outskirts of state capital Thiruvananthapuram this morning.

"Some 20 laborers were doing mining at the private quarry when portions of it suddenly caved in, trapping the workers under the rocks," a senior police official said.

While two laborers died on the spot, those injured have been admitted to a nearby government hospital where the condition of two are said to be serious, he added.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official said. "We will book the quarry owner for negligence if safety norms were found to be flouted."
