WASHINGTON, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- At least 20 people have been injured after a massive fire engulfed a senior assisted-living facility west of Philadelphia, U.S. state of Pennsylvania, late Thursday.

Local authorities said the blaze at Barclay Friends Senior Living Community in West Chester, about 56 kilometers from Philadelphia, began before 11 p.m.

The five-alarm, local reports said, quickly spread to several buildings and burned for hours before being brought under control early Friday.

Dozens of residents were seen wheeled out on beds and in wheelchairs during evacuations, and waited along the street wrapped in blankets.

Local hospitals said they had treated the patients for smoke inhalation and minor leg injuries.

A spokesman for the senior living center said that there were over 130 residents present when the fire broke out, according to media reports.

Police said the fire seems to have started in a unit for residents with memory problems, and the cause of the fire was under investigation.
