JAKARTA, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- The International civil aviation organization (ICAO) has upgraded the level of aviation safety in Indonesia after the country carried out a series of improvement in recent years.

The international aviation group has raised Indonesia's rank to 55 from 151 last year, Director General of Air Transport of the Transport Ministry Agus Santoso said.

"The upgrade is extraordinary as it passes 91 nations," the official said on Thursday night.

The safety grade is measured among the 191 ICAO members, said Santoso.

Indonesia recorded level of compliance (in the aspect of safety) of 81.15 percent, exceeding the level required by the ICAO of 64.71 percent.

The Indonesian government has taken measures to improve the country's aviation safety following a series of air crashes that killed dozens of people years ago.

With the growth in the middle-class and the advent of budget airlines, Indonesia is widely regarded as an emerging market for aviation industry in the region.
