Almost half of S.Korean households own no home on high price

SEOUL, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Almost half of South Korean households owned no home amid high real estate prices, a government report showed Friday.

The number of households possessing their own homes came in at 10,733,000 as of Nov. 1 in 2016, accounting for 55.5 percent of the country's total households, according to Statistics Korea.

It indicated the remaining 44.5 percent owning no home amid higher property prices.

Home prices picked up here in recent years as households rushed to purchase new home with borrowed money amid the record-low interest rate and eased regulations on mortgage financing.

Multiple home owners increased. The number of household owning at least two homes rose 168,000 to 2,893,000 in the cited period.

Despite the rising number of home provision, households possessing one home was on the decline. The number of household possessing one home declined 124,000 to 7,850,000 in the same period.

The number of apartments and houses provided for households stood at 14,526,000 as of Nov. 1 in 2016, up 375,000, or 2.6 percent, from a year earlier.
