ATHENS, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Flash floods that deluged homes and cut off stores and streets with tons of mud Wednesday near the Greek capital of Athens left at least five people dead, the regional government of Attica Prefecture said.

Heavy downpours during the night flooded large areas in the municipalities of Mandra, Nea Peramos and Megara, about 20 kilometers southwest of Athens.

A state of emergency has been declared in the region as the bodies of three men and two women were discovered.

The fire brigade received dozens of telephone calls to assist motorists trapped inside cars.

"We are doing our best to (address) the problems. There are more than 160 calls while 60 firemen are operating in these areas," Stavroula Malliris, the fire brigade spokesperson, told Greek national news agency AMNA.
