ISLAMABAD, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan on Wednesday summoned the Indian Deputy High Commissioner J.P. Singh and lodged formal protest over the recent "unprovoked ceasefire violations" by the Indian forces, which killed an aged woman, the foreign ministry said.

A foreign ministry statement said Director General at the South Asian desk of the foreign ministry Mohammad Faisal summoned the Indian envoy and condemned the firing along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir on Tuesday.

The statement said Indian forces' shelling in Chirikot Sector resulted in the killing of a 75 years old lady.

Pakistan and India had declared ceasefire in 2003 along the LoC, the de facto border, which divides both countries in the disputed Kashmir region.

"Despite calls for restraint, India continues to indulge in ceasefire violations. In 2017 to date, Indian forces have carried out more than 1,300 ceasefire violations along the Line of Control and the Working Boundary, resulting in the Shahadats (martyrdom) of 50 innocent civilians and injuries to 165, as compared to 382 ceasefire violations in 2016," the statement said.

The statement added the Indian diplomat was told that the "deliberate targeting of civilians" is indeed deplorable and contrary to human dignity and international human rights and humanitarian laws.

It said the ceasefire violations by India are a threat to regional peace and security and may lead to a strategic miscalculation.

The director general urged the Indian side to respect the 2003 ceasefire arrangement, investigate this and other incidents of ceasefire violations, and instruct the Indian forces to respect the ceasefire in letter and spirit, so as to maintain peace on the LoC and the Working Boundary.

He also said the Indian side should permit UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) to play its mandated role as per the UN Security Council resolutions.
