CAPE TOWN, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- South African President Jacob Zuma, in his capacity as Chair of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), said on Wednesday that he was sending special envoys to Zimbabwe in light of the unfolding situation in the neighboring country.

Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and Minister of State Security, Bongani Bongo would go to Zimbabwe to meet with President Robert Mugabe and leaders of the Zimbabwean Defence Force (ZDF), Zuma said.

The special envoys will also be sent to Angola to meet with President Joao Lourenco, Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security to brief him on the situation.

Zuma reiterated his call for calm and restraint and for the ZDF to ensure that peace and stability are not undermined in Zimbabwe.

The SADC will continue to monitor the situation closely, Zuma said.

Zuma spoke to Mugabe earlier in the day who indicated that he was confined to his home by the army but said he was fine.

South Africa is also in contact with the Zimbabwean Defence Force (ZDF), according to the Presidency.
