JERUSALEM, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Israel has deployed a rocket defense system in the district of Tel Aviv, the country's financial capital, for fear of revenge attacks by the Gaza-based Islamic Jihad, the military said Tuesday.

A military statement said the anti-rocket Iron Dome battery was deployed over the past week in the area of Tel Aviv, without elaborating.

The system, designed to intercept short-range rockets, has defended against hundreds of rockets fired by Palestinian militants from Gaza during Israel's military campaign there in 2014.

The move comes after the Islamic Jihad, an Iranian-backed Palestinian group, has vowed to avenge the demolition of one of its cross-border tunnels on Oct. 31, during which at least 12 militants were killed.

On Monday, the military said it deployed another Iron Dome battery elsewhere in central Israel.

The move came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened to "take a very firm stance against anyone who tries to attack us or attacks us from any area."

The escalation comes at a sensitive time, as the rival Fatah and Hamas, an Islamist movement that runs Gaza, are working on the implementation of a reconciliation historic deal.

Israel objects the deal.
