Thieves dug 7-meter tunnel into bank in India's Mumbai to loot lockers

NEW DELHI, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- A group of robbers dug a 7.6-meter long tunnel into a bank to the lockers in India's financial capital of Mumbai, local media reports said Tuesday.

The robbery is believed to have taken place at a branch of Bank of Baroda in the Juninagar area near Navi Mumbai early Sunday.

Police officials said they have registered a case and initiated investigations into the incident.

According to reports the robbery was planned over five months ago.

The bank staff discovered the robbery when they went to work on Monday morning and walked in to the locker room to find several vaults open.

"We are examining the CCTV footages. Even though the exact valuation of the looted items is yet to be ascertained," a police official said.
