SEOUL, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- South Korea on Tuesday asked the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to discuss Pyongyang's participation in the PyeongChang Winter Olympics scheduled to be held in February next year in South Korea's eastern region.

The unification ministry said in a statement that Seoul hoped that the DPRK would rapidly confirm its participation in the PyeongChang Winter Olympics and frankly discuss with South Korea all issues on holding the winter sports event as a peace Olympic.

The statement was issued after the UN General Assembly approved a truce resolution to appeal for a suspension of any conflict in the world during the PyeongChang Olympic period. The resolution was submitted by South Korea in September.

The United Nations has, since 1993, adopted an Olympic truce resolution every two years to honor peace, one of the Olympic spirits.

The statement said peace is the fundamental spirit of Olympics Games, noting that South Korea anticipated building peace on the Korean Peninsula and expanding peace and cooperation in the world through the South Korea-hosted winter sports event.

It said South Korea will welcome the DPRK's participation in the PyeongChang Olympic at any time, adding that if the two Koreas meet in the olympic for dialogue and harmony, it would become a new beginning for peace on the peninsula. Enditem
