NEW DELHI, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- Severe smog continued to enveloped the Indian capital for the third day in a row Thursday, largely affecting train services.
Railway officials said that at least 41 trains have been delayed and nine rescheduled due to owing to haze.
"Mainly trains to Delhi are running late because of low visibility on the tracks. Some 10 trains have also been cancelled," a senior official said.
According to India's Central Pollution Control Board officials, air quality continued to remain in the "severe" zone in Delhi. "The air quality index (AQI) at 7:30 a.m. (local time) was recorded at 468, much more than the permissible limit," an official said.
All schools in the national capital have been shut till Sunday because of the prevailing weather conditions and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has urged his counterpart in the northern state of Punjab to immediately stop stubble burning.
Stubble burning by farmers in Punjab and the neighboring state of Haryana is one of the main causes of high pollution levels in the Indian capital. Despite the country's top green court putting a ban on such activity, the practice continues.
