BRUSSELS, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- The European Commission on Wednesday proposed the clean mobility package to accelerate the transition to low and zero-emission vehicles, in a decisive step in implementing its commitments under the Paris Agreement.

The Commission said in a press release that the new targets set in the package, both for new cars and vans to be 30 percent lower in 2030 compared to 2021, would apply from 2025 and 2030 respectively.

The automotive industry is undergoing profound transformation. However, according to official data, EU sales of new passenger cars relative to global sales have decreased from the financial crisis level to 20 percent.

The bloc must seize the opportunity as the United States and China do in order to maintain market shares and to accelerate the transition towards low and zero emission vehicles, said the Commission.

This package includes a political communication outlining the long-term strategy to fight climate change, legislative initiatives on road transport vehicles, infrastructures and combined transport of goods.
